Terms of Service

Last updated: 11th October 2026

These terms govern your use of LitMark, a research and citation tool at litmark.org ("the Service"). By using LitMark, you agree to these terms.

What LitMark is

LitMark helps you find academic papers (open access by default) relevant to a research question, highlights relevant passages, checks whether citations in an essay you provide are accurately represented against their real sources, and can assess an essay against marking criteria you supply, criterion by criterion ("Hit the Mark"). LitMark also provides an AI assistant ("Vera") that can answer questions about how to use LitMark, your results, or your saved folders. LitMark's outputs are generated using AI and academic search services, and are provided to assist your own research and judgement — they are not a substitute for it.

No guarantee of accuracy

LitMark uses AI models and third-party academic databases to generate results. While we've built LitMark to be as accurate and honest as possible, AI-generated content can contain errors. You are responsible for independently verifying any source, quote, citation verdict, or Hit the Mark criterion status before relying on it in coursework or any other submission — a "hit" on Hit the Mark reflects LitMark's read of your essay against the criteria you gave it, not a prediction of the mark you'll receive or a guarantee your marker will agree. LitMark is a research aid, not a substitute for your own academic judgement.

Who can use LitMark

You must be 18 or over to subscribe to LitMark. When you sign up you confirm that you are. If we find out that someone under 18 has subscribed, we may close the account.

Subscriptions and billing

Acceptable use

You agree not to: share your account access with others in a way that circumvents individual subscriptions; attempt to abuse, overload, or scrape the Service; or use LitMark for any unlawful purpose.

Academic integrity

You are responsible for complying with your own institution's academic integrity policies, including any rules about the use of AI tools in your work. LitMark is a tool to help you find and evaluate real sources — how you use it is your responsibility.

No warranty, limitation of liability

The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including academic outcomes.

Changes to the Service or these terms

We may update these terms or change the Service over time. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
